Candidate for President-Elect
- Melanie Kitzan Haindfield (ND 1991)
I have enjoyed being a part of the NYSCAA officer board for the past three years. In that time,I helped coordinate the NYSCAA reunion in Seattle last year, as well as the one in Portland this year. My involvement has reminded me of what an extraordinary group of people support the NYSC, and how proud I am to be a part of that group.
I consider attending science camp to be one of the best experiences of my life. I would enjoy the opportunity to continue to assist in furthering the connections we all shared at camp and promoting the alumni organization to folks who may have fallen out of touch with the group.
The NYSCAA is a dynamic group with great potential to unite past camp delegates and staph, and promote the NYSC. It is an exciting time to be involved with the alumni organization, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to lend my hand in its success.
Candidate for Secretary
- Emily Holmes (IN 1993)
I really value the correspondence I get from the NYSCAA and would love to take an active role in making sure that it continues to be a valuable resource to as many alumni as possible. As a graphic and web designer for more than 10 years, I'm very comfortable putting together newsletters, and laying out the latest science camp updates would be a pleasure. (Campers from the summers of 95/96 may recall seeing my graphic design handiwork on the “wanted” posters of John Giroir that appeared on the buses to camp Allegheny.)
The secretary has other less visible duties too; if elected I wholeheartedly commit to attending the conference calls and keeping detailed minutes to distribute, so there are accurate records of all the meetings. And I can't help but mention that my fellow Indiana '93 delegate, Kirby Lee, will be the President this year - I would relish the opportunity to work with him and put our Hoosier powers to good use!
Candidate for Treasurer
- Pam Dekle Twigg (AL 1978)
As a delegate from Alabama in 1978, I little realized when I first arrived at NYSC what a profound effect it would have on my life. In 1993, I had the opportunity to return to camp for the first time as a lecturer, and I have returned almost every summer since to teach directed studies. I draw a tremendous satisfaction from working with a new group of delegates each year, and have had the wonderful experience of watching many of them grow into successful young adults and return as staph, lecturers, and professional colleagues.
I am currently a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and have had experience in serving on the steering committee and Board of Directors for a local non-profit organization also committed to science education and outreach activities. I would like to offer my services as Treasurer for the NYSC Alumni Association, to help provide leadership and support for a group that has meant a great deal to me.
Candidates for Board of Advisors (BOA)
- Cinda Stipe Voegtli (LA 1977)
I was a 1977 delegate from Louisiana. Science Camp opened my eyes to a much larger world of friends and possibilities. I met people with amazing talents and rich interests. I got to do things I had never thought to do, learned about subjects that had not been on my radar. And I realized it wasn't weird to be smart - and that lots of smart people were the most multi-dimensional and interesting people around - which was a very formative experience for a previously somewhat isolated “nerd” :-)... I have since gone on to major in Electrical Engineering, do hardware and software development in government and industry, become a line and project manager, and finally start my own business. My work life is currently aimed at bringing technology and science to life through projects in medical devices, IT, semi-conductor fabrication, etc etc, via consulting on project management and supporting project managers with online resources and services.
I would very much appreciate the chance to serve on the Board of Advisors to help continue the great legacy of the camp among science-oriented high schoolers moving on to that next great phase of their lives. I was previously heavily involved in the IEEE Engineering Management Society at a time when the organization had great desires to find new ways to serve members. I loved every minute of working with like-minded people to try new things and make things happen. I do believe that camp alumni can offer a lot in terms of energy, insights, connections, work on special projects... Speaking from my personal experience, the broader group of us who have not been as active - but still aware and willing in our hearts! - may just need to be reminded of opportunities to get involved when they can, how they can contribute their ideas, feedback, or connections according to their time. I'd love to be involved with that. Thanks to Facebook and other electronic resources, I think we have plenty of opportunity to do that. I personally have been glad to be corralled a bit by some more active alumni in the last year, launched into Facebook re-connecting, and asked to run for Board of Advisors. I find that my recent re-connecting is bringing back a lot of emotion about how great camp was, and as I see posts about things like every state not even sending delegates --- YAH, that is just not right and I'd like to help do something about that, and whatever else is needed. I'm at a point in my life that I can and want to put in time for the NYSC and Alumni Association. Thank you for considering me for the Board of Advisors.
- Michelle Clauson LaRue (SD 1985)
I'm Michelle (Clauson) LaRue, a 1985 delegate from South Dakota, and I'm presenting myself as a candidate for one of the two open Board Of Advisor positions. In addition to my time as a delegate, I was a Staph member from 1987 - 89, and I served as the first President-Elect after the reorganization of the alumni association in 1994. I was heavily involved in the development of the current alumni association working structure and in NYSCAA reunion planning from 1991 through 2003. I've taken some time out from these activities for the past few years, as I stayed busy with a full-time job (working in climate change and environmental management systems) and raising my almost three-year-old daughter.
I am committed to transforming the NYSC Alumni Association so that we can accomplish the tasks that make our organization work - for its members and for the Camp that we care so much about. It's time for the Alumni Association to step into the 21st century and take the actions needed to realize the possibilities our membership has requested - an online alumni database, a means to share news and updates, the ability to plan local events and activities, and organization of our resources to support the Camp. You can count on me to set goals and milestones for the Alumni Association with my fellow officers and be in action to achieve them. Thanks for your consideration.
