Candidates for President-Elect

  • Kim Phillip (WI 2014; Staph 2018, 2020)

From a delegate, to an annual reunion attendee, to a staph member, my camp interactions have always left me grateful that camp exists and that I’ve gotten to experience and give its magic, even in a virtual format!  Science camp has, without a doubt or hyperbole, changed my life, and I'm glad to know that's a sentiment shared by many fellow alumni.  Science camp, if we are lucky, is the experience of a lifetime that lasts a lifetime.  As alumni, we share the common thread of having felt the magic created by the people at camp but only a subset of us have been able to continue engaging with camp as staph members or reunion attendees.  As president-elect, I hope to increase engagement among alumni between the yearly reunions to continue strengthening and widening the reach we have after camp. I plan to work with the rest of the NYSCAA to create more accessible and inclusive opportunities for creating and experiencing camp’s magic again.

Candidate for Secretary

  • Delaney Rose "DR" Ahrens (FL 2013; Staph 2018-2020)

As many of us, I had no idea how much NYSCamp would affect my life when I applied in 2013. NYSCamp has always been a place for me to grow both personally and professionally. In 2018, 2019, and (volunteer virtually in) 2020 I had the opportunity to work as the NYSCamp Online Media Coordinator. I was able to create social media accounts, gifs, and interactive stories to help promote NYSCamp and engage alumni. This puts me in a great position to become the Secretary for the NYSCAA. I hope to help modernize and maintain consistent social media accounts and campaigns for alumni all over the globe.

Candidate for Treasurer

  • Amit Garg (NE 1994)

I am running for Treasurer again because I'd like to continue my involvement with the NYSC Alumni Association. In the past I have also served a 3 year term on the Board of Advisors. If elected, I will continue to build upon some of the progress that we have made in facilitating communication and connections with Alumni, regaining our non-profit status, keeping the organization's finances on track, and continuing to increase alumni engagement through a variety of programs such as the speaker series that will allow alumni to speak on topics of interest and share their knowledge with the broader NYSC alumni community. Thank you in advance for your consideration and vote!

Candidates for Board of Advisors (BOA)

  • Michael Cheng (PA 2018)

Attending the National Youth Science Camp in 2018 changed my life. As a first-generation college student, I had never experienced an overnight summer camp, let alone a camp that brought together aspiring scientists and engineers from all over the world. I learned what it means to be a good friend and what it means to live vicariously. I am applying for a position on the Board of Advisors to bring NYSC alumni together and to help the National Youth Science Camp keep an appropriate budget. Since leaving camp, I have organized monthly 2018 alumni meetups in the Boston area and keeping friendships together. These meetups have even continued over Zoom during the pandemic. I hope to bring this experience organizing informal meetups to the National Youth Science Camp Alumni Association, and to take advantage of video chat tools (i.e. Google Meet, Zoom, BlueJeans, etc) to connect alumni from across the world. During my freshman year of college, I also managed a $650,000 budget (and eked out a surplus) as a committee chair on Harvard's student government; I hope to bring my budgetary experience to the National Youth Science Camp. I have genuinely enjoyed keeping alumni together and meeting other NYSC people, and if chosen for the board, I will steadfastly execute all of my responsibilities, from advising the Executive Officers to managing the budget. I absolutely loved NYSC and hope to contribute to both alumni community and the camp's continuation. Thank you so much for your consideration, and hope you have a wonderful day.

  • Erin Harper (NH 2016; Staph 2018-2019)

As a 2016 delegate and a 2018,19 staph member, I loved being involved with camp and helping create magic. As an alumni, I would love to give back by serving on the board of advisors. Coming from a state with very few applicants per year, I would love to help the AA with new ideas including how to encourage interest in areas where camp is fairly unknown.

  • Alex McPherson (WV 2007; Staph 2010)

In the last 13 years I've held two separate terms on Board of Advisors and one term as Secretary. Since my last term my skills as a project leader and manager have grown significantly. Additionally, there are new challenges facing the NYSC requiring a larger footprint on social media and the ingenuity to host camp activities online. As a digital media analyst for YouTube I'm up-to-date on the shifts and innovations in the industry and can help the NYSCAA further wade into these confusing waters. Thank you for the consideration.

  • Mercedes Thompson (MD 2018)

The National Youth Science Camp was an incredible formative part of my desire to enter the field of science as a low-income woman of color. I am part of several communities that are severely underrepresented in science, and I would love to be a candidate for the position on the Board of Advisors to inform how we can increase diversity (socioeconomic, racial, gender, cultural, etc...) among camp delegates as a whole. As a current student at Stanford University and a 2018 camp delegate, I can also provide insight on how to keep recent alum of the program continually involved and connected. I also currently serve on advising boards for a few national/international non-profits and I believe I am well equipped with the experience and know-how to make positive change from an advisor role which I would be thrilled to do for NYSCAA.

  • Brian Thornber (RI 2017; Staph 2018-2020)

Through my time as the Rhode Island 2017 Delegate, Staph 2018 & 2019, and Virtual Volunteer Staph 2020, I've been able to experience and re-create the spirit of NYSCamp throughout different changes in the program. Through this position on the Board of Advisors, I hope to help bring that same spirit back to the NYSCAA. Whether through in-person local meetups in a post-Covid world, or online meetups with Alumni from across the globe. I hope to help modernize ways that we do things, and reunite past Alumni with recent Delegates in their area. I'm looking forward to meeting and talking with each of you in the future.
